Before undertaking any undertaking and taking on the leadership role, review the objectives of the organisation, have a clear picture of the goals, and set your visions towards it.

Control freak

Micromanagement is a major leadership difficulty. And this is common to many leaders. This type of management style stunts any possibilities and growth opportunities for the other team members and for the company. You can empower your team to perform their best by providing them with the tools needed to perform their job – training, equipment, and a work-conducive environment. Lastly, empowerment also means giving them independence and the responsibility that comes with performing their tasks.

Inconsistence

An inconsistent leader will create confusion, distrust, and resentment amongst the team. Your actions must be consistent with your words. You cannot demand your employees to always be on time when you are always late. Consistency will gain you respect and appreciation from your team. Ultimately, you must treat everyone in your team equally. Set standards for awards and discipline and stick to them.

Failure to nurture personal relationships

Your team is made up of people, not machines or robots. The human factor weighs in a lot in how they perform. You can give them all the training and incentives there is. However, if you fail to connect with your employee on the human level, you will not get the best out of them. People are driven by relationships and human emotions. Loyalty, friendship, and love are more powerful than any monetary incentive. Develop relationships with your team by getting to know them beyond their jobs. Know the person behind the engineer, secretary, or accountant.

There are two ways to motivate a person; positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is by using rewards. Contrarily, negative reinforcement uses punishment. When dealing with mature and accomplished individuals like in n business leadership, positive is the better, if not the only way to motivate people. Negativity will foster animosity, discouragement, and disdain. Keep things in the positive side.
